LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes are a comparatively recent invention, that has been widely used as light sources in various instruments, ranging from back light of a calculator to head lights of cars. The widespread use of LED lights can be accounted to their durability, low manufacturing cost and small size. Let us have a look at the technology used in LED.
LED Technology
Diodes are characterized by the presence of a p-n junction i.e. a boundary
that separates positively and negatively charged regions within a material.
Due to the charge on the regions, electric current flow from one region to the
other. In case of certain semiconductor diodes, this leads to the phenomenon
of electroluminiscence. This term refers to the production of light by a material,
due to the passage of electric current through it.
This phenomenon is different from incandescence, as it does not involve any
generation of heat or the burning of any material. This is one of the primary
reasons for the durability of of LED lights. As no heat is generated, the material
also does not get damaged.
